Summertime is ripe with live music here in the ‘Sip, so make a dart for the ticket line when you see these names on the playbill.
1) Tyler Keith • North Mississippi’s punk rock frontman heartens listeners to the ideology of the gritty, blue collar, American dreamer.
2) Libby Rae Watson • An apprentice of the late Sam Chatmon, this Mississippi blues woman is sure to satisfy your craving for back porch blues.
3) Jimbo Mathus • Don’t miss Captain Catfish (just one of this musician’s many monikers). Backed by a family of veteran players, his live shows are dynamic.
4) Southern Komfort Brass Band • You’ll want to say you “saw them when…” This Jackson-based brass band brings a high-energy performance to every venue.
5) Reverend John Wilkins • This big man brings a big show when he delivers his soul-stirring mix of blues, gospel and rock. His up-tempo style gets listeners hip-shaking and foot-stomping within the first licks of his guitar.
6) Young Valley • Part indie-rock, part alt-country and altogether enlivening, this four-piece’s concert is the perfect soundtrack for any summer road trip.
7) Cary Hudson • Largely regarded as Mississippi’s quintessential Americana music-maker, if you don’t already have an album, it’s about time you did.
8) Jarekus Singleton • Former athlete turned blues big-name, you’ll hear more Jimi Hendrix than Robert Johnson in this guitarist’s style.
9) Kingfish • Christone Kingfish Ingram got lots of buzz for his White House performance, but this blues virtuoso is no passing trend. Catch him on festival line-ups, or in his hometown of Clarksdale.
10) Cardinal Sons • Based in New Orleans via Jackson, this trio of brothers rocks audiences with their eclectic mix of pop lyricism and funked-up instrumentation.
